The Resurgence of Pop Music in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is currently experiencing a dynamic pop music renaissance, spearheaded by a fresh cohort of young musicians. For decades, the island's primary musical export has been reggaeton and its offshoots, garnering international acclaim. However, a significant shift is underway as artists like ROBI, Matt Louis, Melodie, and Karina Vélez breathe new life into the pop genre, propelling it to levels of popularity not seen in years. This emerging movement draws inspiration from a rich history of Puerto Rican pop icons while simultaneously forging a distinct contemporary sound that resonates with both local and global audiences. These artists are not only redefining the sound of pop but also challenging perceptions of genre boundaries, advocating for a collaborative spirit with urban music, and deeply embedding their Puerto Rican heritage into their artistic expressions.

Historically, Puerto Rico has been home to influential pop figures. In the 1980s, Menudo achieved global stardom, sparking a level of fan frenzy akin to Beatlemania. Ricky Martin, a former Menudo member, went on to become an international Latin pop superstar and a proud ambassador for his homeland. Preceding him, Chayanne was a prominent face of Puerto Rican pop, selling millions of records in the early Nineties. More recently, Kany García has maintained a strong presence on Latin pop charts for two decades, recognized for her exceptional songwriting. Despite these luminaries, Puerto Rican pop artists haven't consistently achieved the same widespread recognition as their counterparts in other parts of Latin America. The current generation, however, signals a potential turning point, poised to elevate Puerto Rican pop to an unprecedented global stage.

Leading this new wave is ROBI, a 25-year-old singer who first gained significant attention in 2022 through his collaboration on “Pantysito.” While he initially explored reggaeton, ROBI ultimately found his true artistic home in pop music, driven by personal and emotional connection. He articulates that his forays into reggaeton were primarily to align with his peers, but he soon realized the importance of authentic self-expression through pop, a genre he deeply loves for its romantic themes and narratives of love and heartbreak. His dedication led to hits like “sorry es que soy bipolarrr” with Young Miko in 2024, inspiring Miko herself to delve further into pop. Collaborations with established artists such as Gale and Sebastián Yatra followed, culminating in his breakout single “BRRREAK!” and his debut album, sorry si soy GRRRIS. ROBI views the connection between urban and pop music as crucial for the growth of pop, advocating for fusion rather than competition, believing in the coexistence of various musical styles on the island.

Matt Louis, 29, also emerged in 2022, introducing atmospheric alternative R&B sounds. His 2025 EP, GAMMA, explored themes of sexuality and race, while also delivering energetic dance tracks like “ABA” featuring RaiNao. The success of this project led to him opening for Rauw Alejandro’s Cosa Nuestra: Capítulo 0 release event. Louis has since become a fan favorite, even starring in a Valentino Beauty campaign. He addresses the fluidity of “pop music,” defining it as whatever is currently popular and culturally relevant, sparking conversations within society. He notes that pop is constantly evolving to reflect dynamic societal shifts, anxieties, and technological advancements, often incorporating maximalist, fragmented, and experimental elements. Louis also challenges common misconceptions about pop, particularly the notion of its lack of depth or its being solely for teenagers, emphasizing the importance of genuinely listening to the music beyond surface aesthetics.

Beyond ROBI and Matt Louis, Puerto Rico boasts a diverse array of burgeoning pop talent. Artists like Karina Vélez, Elia, DEL TORO, Giny, and LaDí are captivating audiences with eclectic styles ranging from bubblegum pop to dream-pop. Krystal, Frido Vargas, Drú, FE7O, Bodine, and Kova Parker consistently produce catchy tracks, while others such as Álvaro Díaz, paopao, RaiNao, and Gyanma are pushing the boundaries of alt-pop, blending R&B, música urbana, and electronic elements. The success of these artists is also largely attributed to influential producers like William Russell, Aris, Brandon Cores, and Rigoazulado, who have been instrumental in shaping the movement's sound. As Puerto Rican pop gains international traction, artists like ROBI and Louis are taking their music to global stages, thoughtfully adapting their sound for new audiences while remaining deeply rooted in their Puerto Rican identity, proving that their unique flow, cadence, and accent are intrinsic to their pop expression.
