Tom Petty's Heartbreakers Reunite and Announce New Box Set

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' surviving members are coming together for a momentous performance at the Americana Awards, nearly a decade after Petty's passing. This special event will see founding members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair share the stage with Chris Stapleton, accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award. This reunion also marks the release of an expansive new box set, "Origins 1971-1978," offering an unprecedented look into the band's foundational years with previously unheard recordings and early collaborations. This collection is a significant tribute to Petty's enduring legacy and the band's musical evolution.

The upcoming Americana Awards will feature an emotional reunion of the Heartbreakers. Original members Mike Campbell (guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Stan Lynch (drums), and Ron Blair (bass) will perform alongside Chris Stapleton, culminating in the acceptance of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Later in the evening, Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston, later additions to the Heartbreakers, will also join them on stage, completing a significant gathering of the band's history.

Coinciding with this reunion, the Tom Petty estate has unveiled details for the new box set, "Origins 1971-1978." This comprehensive collection will be available as a four-disc or five-LP set, each accompanied by a bonus Blu-ray and DVD. Fans can anticipate a wealth of previously unreleased tracks and early collaborations with esteemed musicians such as Al Kooper, Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, and Emory Gordy. A preview of an unreleased song, "Parade Out Loons," is already available, featuring a music video with Iain Armitage from "Young Sheldon."

The box set commences with "No Sleep Til L.A.," a compilation of material Petty recorded both independently and with his early band Mudcrutch, following his move from Gainesville, Florida, to Los Angeles in 1971. Seven of these tracks have never before been officially released. The estate's statement highlights the album's journey from early studio sessions at Criteria Studios in 1971, through the influential Tulsa sessions where the core band members honed their craft, to their eventual success in Los Angeles. It captures Petty's rapid development as a singer, songwriter, and bandleader.

Further enriching the collection are remixed and remastered editions of their first two albums: 1976's "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" and 1978's "You're Gonna Get It!" The box set also includes a live recording from the Record Plant in 1977 and a disc titled "The Cut Out Bin," which features five solo tracks Petty recorded with session musicians before the formation of the Heartbreakers. The package concludes with a DVD of the band's 1978 appearance on "The Old Grey Whistle Test." BBC host Bob Harris, reflecting on that performance, described it as one of the greatest he had witnessed, praising the band's exceptional artistry and the electrifying atmosphere they created. The vinyl edition offers an additional 88-page fanzine with liner notes by Bud Scoppa and veteran Rolling Stone writer David Fricke.

Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell had previously hinted at a future reunion, expressing the deep bond among the band members. He emphasized that any future performances would not involve replacing Tom Petty but might explore collaborations with other musicians on new material, preserving the unique essence of the Heartbreakers' sound while honoring Petty's irreplaceable presence.
