DiCaprio, Bezos Launch $200M Fund for Endangered Species

A groundbreaking conservation effort has been initiated by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Bezos, and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, dedicating a substantial $200 million fund to safeguard imperiled species globally. Named the Phoenix Species Project, this collaborative venture between DiCaprio's organization, Re:wild, and the Bezos Earth Fund is poised to make a significant impact on biodiversity protection.

The Phoenix Species Project aims to bolster the survival prospects of 100 species teetering on the brink of extinction. These species encompass a diverse array of life forms, from majestic mammals and delicate amphibians to intriguing reptiles, vibrant birds, various fish, intricate invertebrates, and essential plant life. Their habitats span the globe, ranging from expansive ocean ecosystems to unique volcanic terrains across 30 different nations. A key aspect of this initiative involves close collaboration with Indigenous communities, local populations, leading scientists, and dedicated conservationists, ensuring that recovery strategies are culturally sensitive and scientifically sound.

This substantial financial commitment marks the most significant single philanthropic investment ever made toward the recovery of critically endangered species. The Bezos Earth Fund is contributing an impressive $100 million to this cause, a participation facilitated by DiCaprio's personal connection with the couple. This contribution is being matched by Re:wild, with additional support stemming from DiCaprio himself, the Age of Union, and the Todd Graves Family Foundation, collectively forming a powerful alliance for conservation.

Unlike conventional short-term grants, this initiative emphasizes sustained investment, providing the necessary resources for accelerated wildlife recovery. Over 100 local and international partners will be at the forefront of these efforts, customizing recovery plans to suit the specific needs of each species and its unique environment. The project aligns with Target 4 of the CBD Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which urges global governments to prevent extinctions and enhance the conservation status of vulnerable species. The Reverse the Red Action Partnership is actively involved in assisting governments in identifying priority species and implementing crucial recovery actions. Furthermore, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission, the world's largest volunteer conservation science network, serves as a global knowledge partner, lending its expertise to the project.
