Busan International Film Festival Unveils Esteemed Jury Panels for Prestigious Awards

The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has proudly revealed its jury panels for four significant awards: the BIFF Mecenat Award, the Sonje Award, the Netpac Award, and the Fipresci Award. These esteemed juries, composed of renowned figures from the global film industry, will evaluate a diverse range of cinematic works, celebrating exceptional talent in documentary filmmaking, short films, and artistic contributions from Asian cinema.

For the BIFF Mecenat Award, which honors outstanding Korean or Asian documentaries in the Wide Angle Competition with a prize of KRW 10 million (approximately $7,300), the jury consists of Rintu Thomas, Kim Taeil, and Zhou Hao. Rintu Thomas is an acclaimed co-director of "Writing With Fire," a Peabody Award winner and Oscar nominee. Kim Taeil, recognized for his ongoing "People's World History" project, previously secured the Woonpa Award and the BIFF Mecenat Award for his works. Zhou Hao, a former journalist, is known for his observational documentaries such as "Cotton" and "The Chinese Mayor," which have received accolades at various international festivals.

The Sonje Award, dedicated to recognizing an exceptional Korean or Asian short film in the Wide Angle Competition with an identical KRW 10 million prize, will be adjudicated by Anuparna Roy, Abinash Bikram Shah, and Lee Ranhee. Anuparna Roy's films, including "Songs of Forgotten Trees" and "Lovers in the Blue Night," have premiered and won awards at the Venice Film Festival. Abinash Bikram Shah, a graduate of the Chanel x BIFF Asian Film Academy, earned the Jury Prize at Cannes for his film "Elephants in the Fog." Lee Ranhee, a filmmaker who transitioned from theater, has directed notable works like "A Perm" and "The Final Semester," focusing on narratives of women crossing borders and individuals navigating career challenges.

The Netpac Award, presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema to an outstanding film in the Vision section, features a jury comprising Nina Kochelyaeva, Matthew Poon, and Lee Dongha. Nina Kochelyaeva, head of film education development at VGIK, has an extensive background as a scholar, documentary filmmaker, and festival programmer. Matthew Poon serves as senior project manager at HKIFF Industry and has been a juror and speaker at numerous international film events. Lee Dongha, CEO of Redpeter Films and chairperson of the Producers Guild of Korea, has produced several successful films, including "Train to Busan" and "Dora," which is part of this year's BIFF selection.

Finally, the Fipresci Award, granted by the Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique for artistic achievement in a Vision section film, will be judged by Ma Xingxu, Teresa Vena, and Roh Chul-hwan. Ma Xingxu is a respected film critic and editor known for his festival coverage and in-depth interviews on contemporary auteur cinema. Teresa Vena, based in Berlin and Switzerland, is a writer and curator with experience on international festival juries. Roh Chul-hwan, a professor of theater and film studies at Inha University, specializes in film and media industry policy and visual storytelling.

The 31st Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from October 6-15 at the Busan Cinema Center and various venues across Busan. Concurrently, the 21st Asian Contents & Film Market will be held from October 10-13, further enriching the festival's vibrant atmosphere.
